Use ‘=’ or LIKE to compare strings in SQL?

There’s the (almost religious) discussion, if you should use LIKE or ‘=’ to compare strings in SQL statements.

• Are there reasons to use LIKE?
• Are there reasons to use ‘=’?
• Performance? Readability?
