Check if object exists in JavaScript

How do I verify the existence of an object in JavaScript?

The following works:

if (!null)
   alert("GOT HERE");

But this throws an Error:

if (!maybeObject)
   alert("GOT HERE");

The Error:

maybeObject is not defined.
