When to use setAttribute vs .attribute= in JavaScript?

Has a best-practice around using setAttribute instead of the dot (.) attribute notation been developed?

E.g.:

myObj.setAttribute("className", "nameOfClass");
myObj.setAttribute("id", "someID");

or

myObj.className = "nameOfClass";
myObj.id = "someID";
